So often I’m asked to name my “favorite” marine-based skincare ingredient (a.k.a. seaweed). To me that question is like asking me to choose my favorite child. Impossible. Nevertheless, I have narrowed the favs of my seaweed, vegan skincare line down to three. And as we roll deeper into the lights, parties, festivities and high-glam of December, there’s no better season to talk about the sexiest of my picks: Gigartina algae.
Why I Love Gigartina:
Girgartina algae is red. Red-hot sexy in color. It’s also pure – hand-harvested off the shores of Patagonia, among the most pristine sea water in the world. And Gigartina is ‘girly.’ Unlike all other plants, Gigartina has both male and female parts. The bumpy parts are female (eggs) which release a healing gel of sugar, which I call the ‘amniotic fluid‘ of seaweeds.
What It Does:
The health-and-beauty benefits of Gigartina algae are multi-dimensional. This healing red algae bolsters our body’s immune system, improves blood and lymph circulation, helps heal eczema and psoriasis, and reduces water retention. Topically, to the skin, Gigartina offers the perfect elixir: moisturizing, hydrating and firming properties.
How To Use It:
- Bathe: Fill your bathtub with hot water laced with dry pieces of Ggartina, and soak 20 minutes.
- Spritz: Throughout the day, spritz your face with a mist containing Gigartina to restore moisture.
- Glam-Up – Before stepping out to that holiday-red event, soak a piece of Gigartina for 20 minutes and then mix the gel with some Essential Hydrating Oil to give your skin the ultimate glow.
