We are so excited to see OSEA Founder Jenefer Palmer at TEDxSF! Jenefer is crazy about seaweed. “I know that it’s an unlikely love story,” she admits. Jenefer attributes her love of the sea and sea plants in part to her Grandmother Elsa Reushle and in part to the incredible healing effects of seaweed on our skin and bodies.
It turn out, seaweed is very lovable! It’s true, aside from producing an estimated 70% of the oxygen in our atmosphere, marine algae offers us incredible skincare benefits. Seaweed alginate (gel) has been used to treat burns and skin maladies for centuries. And in addition to soothing, hydrating, and mineralizing skin, certain types of seaweed including the organic Gigartina and Undaria Algae that OSEA uses in its formulations, have anti-aging benefits such as boosting your skin’s collagen production.

Gigartina is a red algae that has hydrophilic properties which make it an excellent moisturizing agent. It also protects the skin against environmental aggressors. The iodine and bromine in Gigartina are bound to polyphenols that function as an antiseptic and disinfecting agent. Studies indicate Gigartina is helpful in healing Herpes simplex, psoriasis and eczema. Gigartina is one of the best algae for skin because it’s so easy to extract the natural occurring carrageenan–a highly concentrated, sulfated polysaccharide. Polysaccharides are known to hydrate, regulate sebum production, induce desquamation and stimulate cell regeneration. Red Algae has also been linked to a muco-polysaccharide that helps lock in moisture and boost the production of collagen.
OSEA’s Gigartina algae is ecoresponsably harvested, handpicked, washed with fresh water and sun-dried on special drying beds.
