Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) and Monoethanolamine (MEA). The European Union has prohibited DEA in cosmetics due to carcinogenic concerns.Often Found In : sunscreens, bath powders, moisturizers, hair products and soaps.
DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Polyoxymethylene Urea, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Bromopol, Glyoxal and Quaternium-15. These release formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen. FRPs have been linked to skin irritation and cancer.Often Found In : cleansers, sunscreen, moisturizers, masks, nail polish and hair products.
Used in skin lighteners, hydroquinone is linked to cancer, respiratory issues and organ toxicity. Prohibited in the EU. Restricted use in Canada.Often Found In : moisturizers, cleansers, lightening and brightening treatments.
in skincare, these are tiny particles of ingredients that can penetrate skin, organs and even damage DNA. Nanoparticles aren’t listed on labels, but may be present in products that contain zinc oxide, iron oxide, cerium oxide, and silicon dioxide.Often Found In : sunscreen, moisturizers and masks.
Ethyl, Butyl, Methyl, Propyl, Isopropyl and Isobutyl parabens are used as preservatives. After water, parabens are the second most common ingredient in skin care products. Parabens have been linked to cancer (breast and skin), reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption and developmental toxicity.Often Found In : cleansers, moisturizers, hair products and sunscreen.
are synthetic compounds often contaminated with toxic Ethylene Oxide and 1,4 Dioxane–both known human carcinogens. The FDA does not require either Ethylene Oxide or 1,4 Dioxane to be listed as an ingredient on product labels so steer clear of PEG compounds!Often Found In : moisturizers, cleansers, serums and hair products.
Petroleum, Mineral Oil or Paraffin Oil are byproducts of the oil refinery process. Petrolatum may be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, a probable human carcinogen. The EU prohibits petroleum that has not been proven to be free of PAHs. In the U.S., the use of contaminated petroleum is unregulated. Avoid!Often Found In : moisturizers, masks, makeup, baby products.
DEP, DBP, DEHP have been linked to endocrine disruption, cancer and developmental and reproductive toxicity. Phthlates are banned in cosmetics and personal care products in the EU. In the U.S., phthalates are unregulated and may be concealed under ingredients listed as “fragrance” or “parfum.”Often Found In : nail products, hair products, moisturizers, soaps and perfumes.
1,2-Dihydroxypropane, 1,2-Propanediol, 2-Hydroxypropanol, Methylethyl Glycol, Propane-1,2-Diol, 1,2-Dihydroxypropane. A byproduct of the oil refinery process. Used in skincare to bind moisture to the skin. May cause redness, dermatitis and other allergies.Often Found In : cleansers, moisturizers, hair products, shaving products and sunscreens.
Dimethicone Copolyol, Dimethyl Silicone, Highly Polymerized Methyl Polysiloxane, Methyl Polysiloxane. Prevents skin from performing its normal activities such as sweating and overturning skin cells. Linked to organ system toxicity and skin irritation.Often Found In : moisturizers, hair products and especially make-up primers.
Used as an emulsifier and foaming agent. SLS is an eye, skin and lung irritant. As with PEG compounds, SLS may also be contaminated with Ethylene Oxide or 1,4 Dioxane–both known human carcinogens.Often Found In : cleansers and hair products - including baby shampoos.
Studies have linked synthetic colors in food to cancer. To be safe, avoid products containing synthetic colors including Blue 1, Green 3, FD&C Yellow 6.Often Found In : cleansers, moisturizers and hair products.
