Your genetics play a dominant role in how you look and feel as you age. However, regardless of how your parents and grandparents age, you can control some factors that influence your aging journey. Caring for yourself and nourishing your skin, body, and mind can all help you age gracefully. With that in mind, here are five things you can start doing today to support healthy aging and look and feel your best at every age.
Invest in Quality Skincare
Your skin is your largest organ, and taking time to nourish and care for it with high-quality, moisturizing products is your first defense against aging. As skin ages, collagen production and cell turnover slow down, creating lines, wrinkles, and slack skin.
One way to combat the changes in your skin is with a skincare routine incorporating products containing vital nutrients and clean ingredients, including:
- Niacinamide, to smooth skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Plant-based peptides for a smoother and more even complexion
- Vitamin C, to improve brightness and radiance
- Natural ceramides for increased hydration and support for the skin’s natural moisture barrier
- Bio-retinol to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without irritation
Use an Anti-Aging Face Serum
Your skin is your largest organ, and treating it with products that nourish and moisturize it is your first line of defense when it comes to the aging process. As skin ages, collagen production and cell turnover slow down, creating lines, wrinkles and slack skin. But if you took all the ingredients that have been shown to slow and reverse the aging process in the skin, you would have a mixture of niacinamide (to smooth skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles), plant-based peptides (to make skin feel firmer and create a more even complexion), vitamin C (to visibly improve brightness and radiance) and natural ceramides (to hydrate while supporting the skin’s own moisture barrier).
In other words, you would have a bottle of OSEA’s Anti-Aging Sea Serum. Apply two to three drops to clean skin every day to promote the look of healthy, radiant skin.
Eat Plants
You are what you eat, and there’s evidence that a diet of foods rich in nutrients, vitamins, and unsaturated fats can slow the effects of aging on the skin. Processed sugars and saturated fats, as well as excess alcohol consumption, can increase oxidative stress, meaning your body cannot detoxify itself as effectively.
Instead, a healthy diet like the Mediterranean diet—high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and olive oil (and low in refined carbohydrates, sugar, and processed foods)— is packed with antioxidants, which reduce oxidative stress and the damage it can do to your skin, as well as the rest of your body.
Whatever you do, avoid yo-yo dieting. Constantly losing and gaining weight or going on unhealthy crash diets can reduce collagen and affect your skin’s elasticity. Maintain a consistent diet rich in plants and protein; your skin and body will stay healthy.
Sweat It Out
Although any type of exercise is good for you, research shows that short, intense workouts may be more beneficial to reversing the effects of aging than moderate ones. Even quick bursts of cardio—as brief as four minutes—can have powerful anti-aging benefits for cardiovascular health.
Get Your Rest
Lack of sleep is the easiest way to make the skin appear dull, tired, and stressed. When the body feels stressed, it manifests on the skin as fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and dryness.
To help counteract these effects — and promote glowing and refreshed skin — apply a layer of our Dream Night Cream before you go to sleep. Packed with algae-derived bio retinol and nourishing shea butter and glycerin, this ultra-moisturizing cream is the first overnight moisturizer that is clinically shown to reduce the effects of stress on the skin. It works during the skin’s nightly repair phase to boost radiance, making the skin look and feel well-rested.
Take a Breath
Stress will also appear in your skin, often in the form of a dull complexion, acne, and increased signs of aging. Meditating and practicing regular mindfulness can help you feel calmer and more centered and reverse the cellular aging process. Researchers have found that a consistent practice of mindful meditation leads to feeling more grounded and present and, in some cases, increased feelings of joy. And what could be more youthful than that.
