Introducing Amie Valpone, best-selling author, speaker and clean eating expert. Not only does she have her own wellness website, The Healthy Apple, but she also has her very own detox program and a clean eating cookbook! We discovered Amie’s story and asked her some of our burning questions. How did you get to where you are today?
Rather than enjoying the youth and virility of my 20s, I suffered a decade of chronic illnesses. It started with severe leg swelling[...][horrible digestive issues and lethargy. Yet, this pain set me on my journey of real detoxification, leading me to feel healthier and more energetic than I had in more than a decade. Society made me think of detoxing as extreme juice diets and other harmful techniques. But I soon realized detoxing doesn’t have to be this way; toxins needed addressed and removed from my liver and other organs to heal my body and solve problems that traditional Western medicine couldn't solve for me.What is your philosophy and mission?
Were the last ten years easy? Heck no. But I learned a lot, quit my corporate job and now I am living my dream--my passion. My goal is to help others who are frustrated and exhausted with Western medicine, those who can't get a diagnosis and those who are on pills to mask symptoms. I am living proof you can heal yourself. It takes time. It takes patience. And it takes removing yourself from all the ‘noise’ out there from what everyone else is telling you to eat, drink and do. We are all so different; you’ve gotta tap into yourself and trust yourself. Without that, true healing is not possible.
Helping people has enriched my life and I truly feel blessed to be doing the work I do.
What do you mean when you refer to toxins?
Toxins are harmful substances that unfortunately are so prevalent in our daily life that they’ve established a home in our bodies and take a toll on our organs. Hidden in our air (car exhaust, etc), tap water, processed food (and pesticides, herbicides, etc), cleaning supplies and beauty products (shampoo, deodorant, etc), toxins are associated with toxicity issues such as arthritis, acne, hormonal imbalances, weight gain and autoimmune disease.
My mindset shifted when I started researching how toxic my body was, where my toxins were coming from and what they could be doing to my health. So many people worry about children ingesting that insect repellent spray stored under the sink, but not many folks are as concerned by the toxic pesticides on the conventional blueberries!Tell us about your programs.
I created these programs because I was working with hundreds of clients and they all had similar root causes as to what was going on in their body. This inspired me to create online programs for people so that they don’t have to wait to set up a private session with me- now they can order it and start reading and get to the root cause of what’s going on in their body right away.
Are they for everyone?
I have numerous programs-- there’s something for everyone! Each program contains shopping lists of the anti-inflammatory foods I recommend as well as a one week meal plan with easy recipes, which is catered to each progra][...]. I have everything from a NEW 30 Day Reset to my 3 Month Anti-Inflammatory Meal Plan to Eczema to IBS to Candida to Dysbiosis to a Kid’s Digestive Solution to Arthritis and Asthma and more. What is your best advice for someone who is struggling with chronic disease?
For anyone that is going through something, my best advice is to learn how to trust yourself and realize that YOU have the power. I gave my power away to every doctor and expert and many times I ended up a lot worse than I was. I was too young to know how to trust myself. Now, I’m 35 and I’ve realized that I have the power and YOU all have the power and you can’t let anyone take that away from you. You know your body better than anyone else- don’t let someone tell you what to do if it doesn’t feel right to you. What is your favorite quick and easy recipe?
These are the BEST! Seriously I’m addicted. Grain-Free Sweet Potato Flatbread. I could eat them daily dipped into hummus or on their own. High in protein, lots of fiber and so much flavor. Seriously addicting and obviously so healthy, too.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love being in nature. I live in Manhattan near the water so going outdoors and being near the water or spending time in Central Park is fun for me. I also love to read--I read about a book a week and I’m always hungry for more information. I also love to travel and meet new people. I’m a people person but I’m an introverted extrovert so I need a lot of quiet, alone time. That’s something that wasn’t the case years ago. I was always the life of the party and of course, still can be...but now, I recharge alone instead of in groups. I spend a lot of time alone, which has been so healing in and of itself with my healing journey. What is your favorite self-care ritual?
Taking Epsom salt baths. It’s the easiest way to detox your body because your skin is your biggest organ (which is why it’s so important to use non-toxic skincare and beauty products). I sit in the warm bath for 30 minutes and listen to relaxing music by Satnum Kaur. It’s fabulous.
