A Guide to Creating a Spring Body Care Routine

Written by OSEA Staff | Published September 12, 2024

With the dry and cold winds of winter turning into warmer breezes of spring, your skin will likely be going through changes as well. Understanding how to smoothly transition your body care routine between seasons can help ensure your skin stays healthy and moisturized — without feeling greasy. Read on to discover some helpful tips on how to make the transition.

Skincare Products for Spring

Winter products for the skin tend to be heavier to lock moisture in and build a protective barrier against colder and drier air. Balms, for example, typically rely on oil bases, such as coconut oil, and don't contain any water in their ingredients list to deliver the most intense boost of hydration. Our Anti-Aging Body Balm uses coconut, passion fruit seed, and safflower seed oils to keep the skin moisturized all winter long.

When transitioning to spring, balms can quickly become too heavy for the skin. Switch to body lotions instead, as they use water in their formulas for a lighter application. Lotions that use ingredients like hyaluronic acid help with moisture absorption and retention. Our Undaria Algae™ Body Lotion combines collagen and hyaluronic acid to provide instant moisture and visibly firming results.

Changes to Your Routine

Sweat can increase build-up on your skin. When the weather becomes warmer, incorporate exfoliation into your weekly body care routine. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and any build-up that may be blocking the pores. It also promotes skin cell renewal. This means that it can help with dull-looking skin, minimize breakouts, and help even out skin texture over time.

It’s important to note that exfoliation should not be done every day. Instead, slowly increase the frequency from once a week to a maximum of two to three times a week (depending on your skin’s sensitivity). Exfoliation should also always be done gently.

Our Salts of the Earth Body Scrub uses mineral-rich salts to buff skin and shea butter to help nourish it as you exfoliate. Lightly massage this scrub onto wet skin, buffing away dry areas and nourishing the skin. Our Undaria Cleansing Body Polish uses both physical and chemical exfoliation for a supercharged cleanse boosted by Undaria seaweed for extra nourishment. For a no-shower required exfoliation, we love this Plant-Based Body Brush for a dry exfoliation to prep your skin before applying a hydrating body lotion.

A Successful Transition

While a transition in skincare can be essential to maintaining your skin’s healthy glow, you still have to ensure products are used correctly. Switching products suddenly or changing routines drastically can lead to irritated skin, increased breakouts, or dryness.

When trying out new products, always do a patch test before applying it broadly. This means testing a small amount on your arm and allowing it a few hours to make sure you don't have an allergic or adverse reaction. Additionally, try to only change one product at a time. This allows your skin to become familiar with the new product and adapt to it. Typically, one to two weeks per product change is a safe amount of time.

Finally, remember that everyone's skin is different. For example, if you tend toward more dryness, your spring moisturizer may be the same one you use when the weather is cool. If you have more sensitive skin, you may want to keep physical exfoliation out of the picture and instead focus on gentle chemical exfoliants alone.

Spring into warmer weather with a routine that works for you.
