A Conversation with Elissa Goodman: 5 Simple Steps to Detoxify Your Life

We caught up with L.A.-based holistic nutritionist, author and cleanse expert, Elissa Goodman, to talk all things detox—mind, body, and home. A true authority in the wellness space, Elissa’s approach is all about simple yet powerful shifts that help us look and feel our best. Her EG Kitchen Cleanses, which include over 50 different vegetables—are some of our absolute favorite soups in LA. But for her, detox isn’t just about what we eat—it’s a way of life.

From the morning rituals that set the tone for the day to the overlooked toxins hiding in our homes, Elissa shared her top five tips for cleansing from the inside out. We chatted about the underrated superfoods she swears by—spoiler: we both have a thing for sea salt—the wellness tools she can’t live without and her go-to method for resetting the body in just five days.


What inspired your journey into holistic nutrition?


I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 32—before having kids and early in my life—and I realized I needed to make some physical, emotional, and spiritual health changes if I wanted to heal and get healthy. I didn’t do the full treatment, just radiation. Then, 11.5 years later, my husband was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He passed away at 46.

Both experiences were incredibly traumatic and made me realize that I needed to regain my strength and be as healthy as possible to raise my two daughters as a single mom. It was challenging. In order to have the energy to start my life over, I went back to school, got certified in Eastern and Western modalities, nutrition, supplements, and emotional wellbeing and completely fell in love with it all.

I was hired by Cafe Gratitude, M Cafe, Earth Bar and Erewhon to create food programs for them. About 12 years ago, I started my own program: four different cleanses that go out each week, as well as bars and granola. During COVID, I trained in functional medicine and learned how to read blood work, which I now incorporate into my work with clients. That has been amazing. I analyze metabolic markers, hormones, and thyroid function and then provide them with supplements and nourishing food. The body has an incredible ability to reset. Removing toxic foods and replenishing it with the right nutrients can make a noticeable difference in just five days.


What are five detox tips everyone can incorporate into their daily lives?


1. Sleep is crucial for detoxification—your body detoxes through the night. Prioritize good sleep hygiene and aim for seven to eight hours as a non-negotiable.

2. Hydration: Even a 2–3% drop in hydration can affect brain function and spike cortisol levels. Women should aim for 96 ounces of water daily, and men should get 120 ounces. Minerals are just as important—Ultima Replenisher Hydrating Powder is a great option. I dilute one scoop in 32 ounces of water.

3. Fiber: I’m a big juicer, but I also blend my greens to get more fiber—cucumber, celery, lemon, ginger, parsley, and cilantro. We need at least 30 grams of fiber daily, and I like to get mine first thing in the morning. These ingredients all support the body’s natural detox process.

4. Juicing: All of these greens are incredibly detoxifying, acting as a liquid IV of vitamins and minerals for your system. I never juice fruit—vegetables cleanse the liver, delivering nutrients at the cellular level.

5. Sweating: Detoxing through sweat is essential—whether through sauna, hot yoga, or exercise.


Describe your work.


I’m writing my second book, Aging Hacks. I feel the best I’ve ever felt—and I’m about to turn 65.


What’s something you always keep in your kitchen?


Sea salt. Sometimes I take a pinch in the afternoon for an energy boost and extra minerals.

And, of course, my cleanses—soups, tonics, and broths.


What’s the most underrated ingredient for health and wellness?


Colostrum powder – Great for digestion, auto-immune support, hair, skin, and nails. People are just starting to catch on.

Stevia - it sweetens things but doesn’t raise your blood sugar. 100% pure stevia.

Red light. It’s a fantastic healing modality- but it is expensive. The Lumebox or Omnilux Face Mask are great.

Weighted blanket. I know it’s been a lifesaver for people in times of stress.


What are 5 easy ways to detox your home?

1. Ditch plastic – Avoid using plastics in the house. Use glass containers for reheating food and skip plastic water bottles.
2. Switch to non-toxic products – Opt for clean toiletries, laundry detergents, and household cleaning supplies.
3. Take your shoes off at the door or wipe the bottom your shoes - I don’t know why I don’t do this more often, but it’s important.
4. Use clean cookware – Invest in non-toxic cooking supplies and cookware to avoid exposure to harmful materials.
5. Plants – Having lots of plants, especially those known for detoxifying the air, can make a big difference.


Do you have a favorite superfood or ingredient that you swear by?


Dandelion greens have been at the top of my list for years. They’re a powerful detoxifier for the liver and support gut health. I always add them to my juices—I’m a big fan.

I meditate first - I don’t use a product. I drink two cups of water.


Coffee or matcha?:


I love both, but my go-to is organic coffee.


My perfect morning ritual:


I drink two cups of water. I meditate for 15 minutes to set my head straight. I write down an intention for the day. I like to focus on the positive and look for the good that’s happening around me. There’s a lot to be thankful for right now. I go for walks every day, I do yoga, Pilates, play pickle ball, golf. I need 15 minutes of early morning sunlight to help reset my circadian rhythms. Any chance I get to be outdoors is crucial.


The first time I experienced the healing powers of the nature I was_____


I grew up in Arizona and used to ride horses. When I was in grade school, I would ride my horse up the mountains—it was an incredible experience, and to this day, one of the most memorable. It was so healing to be alone on a horse, looking out over the city.


The one thing I am most proud of is:


My girls. They’re like my Buddhas. They actually know more than I do, and they’re 30 and 27. Their groundedness and advice blow me away every time because it’s always so good. And I thought I was supposed to be the one giving the advice and grounding them, but somehow, they’re the ones who ground me. They’re amazing.

And I also feel so lucky that I get to show them the strength it takes to consistently reinvent yourself. Sometimes, you have to detox—not just your health, but also the unhealthy people in your life—and not be afraid to do it.
