Jessica is a woman on a mission. As an advocate for safe products, corporate accountability, consumer wellness and female empowerment, she definitely speaks our language! Alongside her two co-founders, she started Prima to help people reclaim their health and happiness. We connected to talk about her work, the importance of naturally derived ingredients and how she unwinds from the challenges of modern life.
What inspired you to create Prima?
I’ve been a beauty activist and clean product advocate since I was fifteen years old (fun fact: Melissa and Jenefer supported my teen-led campaign and donated OSEA products for our events –– beginning in 2005!) After I got my MBA at Harvard, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my other passion: cannabis. Prima was born when I met my business partners, Laurel Angelica Myers and Christopher Gavigan, and we came together to build a purpose-driven brand rooted in education, scientific integrity, and the highest quality products.
Prima is the expression of our values and our belief that hemp and CBD are catalysts for an uprising — one that redefines wellbeing by elevating plant-based products and empowering people to feel better in their bodies.
Safe, non-toxic ingredients are such an important cornerstone for both Prima and OSEA. Why is it a vital consideration for you?
No one should compromise their health to use a product. Just as important as efficacy is product safety, and we must ensure that our products are safe enough for the most vulnerable people. My co-founders and I have all helped to shape the clean product industry, and now we’re taking our decades of learnings to create the most elevated products to drive meaningful functional benefits.
We believe third party certifications and standards are critical in ensuring product safety. Prima is the first CBD brand to be Made Safe Certified and EWG Verified. We’re also Leaping Bunny Certified and certified glyphosate-free. Because CBD comes from the most natural source (a plant), it’s important for us to maintain the integrity of the plant and ensure the purity of the other ingredients we use.
“Wellness is feeling good –– physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.”
Treading lightly upon our planet is also a major priority for both our brands. Can you tell us about Prima’s sustainability initiatives?
Sustainability is built into Prima’s DNA. We’ve been carbon neutral since day one and the majority of our packaging is recyclable and sustainable. We achieved our B Corp certification in the first year of business, which demonstrates that we’re using business as a force for good, and we’re the first CBD brand to be a Public Benefit Corp (PBC), reaffirming our commitment to sustainable business practices and safe products.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is feeling good –– physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.
Do you have any at-home selfcare rituals that are a part of your daily routine?
Cooking my own meals is certainly a part of my self-care ritual, as it is a meditative process for me and it is nourishing to create exactly what I want to eat. I buy most of my groceries at the weekly farmers market and I love taking my time in the kitchen and evolving my cooking with the seasons.
What does the future hold for Prima and for you personally?
We hope to be the leading brand in the future of functional wellbeing. I hope to continue to step into my power as a woman and help set the tone for a future generation of female entrepreneurs.
Are there any mantras that particularly resonate with you?
You are safe. You are loved. You belong.
