What if there was a drink you could have before bed that could help you get a better night’s sleep? That’s just what the viral TikTok “sleepy girl mocktail” promises to do. A blend of tart cherry juice, sparkling water and magnesium powder is thought by millions on the internet to be a health biohack for sleepless nights. But what does the research actually say about the “sleepy girl” ingredients? Let’s get into it.
Magnesium is a mineral found in green vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. It has long been known for its calming effects on your nervous system¹, helping you unwind and relax aching, tense muscles. Topical magnesium, on the other hand, when combined with lavender in our Dream Bio-Retinol Body Serum, soothes and helps promote a sense of serenity for a restful night. Soak in a bath of Epsom salts and you might just feel the muscle-relieving power of magnesium.
Tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. A study in 2010 showed that consuming tart cherry juice increased melatonin levels and improved sleep quality in adults with insomnia². You can create your own “sleepy girl mocktail” using tart cherry juice and magnesium, or try Ritual Magnesium+, a 2-in-1 blend formulated for sleep, mind and muscle relaxation, featuring tart cherry and magnesium bisglycinate.
For an added boost of nutrients, we love blending in a small amount of sea moss (a kind of red algae) to our bedtime beverage. This mineral-rich sea vegetable is packed with iodine, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamins like A, C and E, making it just as nourishing for your body as it is for your skin.
While the “sleepy girl mocktail” may be helpful as part of a relaxing wind-down routine, it’s not a standalone cure for insomnia. Before trying any new supplement, it’s always best to seek the advice of your doctor. No supplement is a replacement for a balanced diet, exercise and good sleep hygiene.
