Our Ingredient Method

essential oils and botanicals

OSEA really began with a simple question: If we invested in the best non-toxic ingredients, would the customer notice? After 20 years, it’s obvious. You do. We use only the finest plant-based ingredients because we truly believe that mother nature provides the most effective skin care solutions possible.

Strong Connection to our Ingredient Source: Many skincare companies purchase plant-based extracts in bulk with little or no connection to the source. This can result in adulterated ingredients that may also contain trace chemicals from the extraction process. We meticulously source and monitor our plant-based ingredients from suppliers that we know and trust and who meet our rigorous standards of purity. We have worked closely with most of our suppliers for over 20 years!

Our organic seaweeds, present in nearly all of our formulations are sourced directly from family friends in the pristine Sea of Patagonia. Since the early 90’s, we have traveled numerous times to Patagonia to help harvest and dry seaweed, and bear witness to the extraction of this incredible superfood.

Our Seaweed Source

Patagonia organic seaweed

“The moment I pulled my first harvest of seaweed directly from the waters, I knew I had found the key ingredient around which my skincare line would be based. To this day, I love to be present on the Patagonian shores when we hand-harvest our seaweeds directly from those frigid waters.”

-Jenefer Palmer, OSEA Founder

Benefits of Bioavailable Seaweed

Seaweed (marine algae) is one of the most abundant sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. It is ten times richer in trace elements than land plants! Seaweed is unique in that it contains bioavailable ingredients, meaning that its active, nutrient-rich compounds are more readily absorbed by your body. Greater absorption of nutrients, means better results for your skin. Because of its bioavailable nature, seaweed provides a multitude of benefits including reducing the appearance of redness and blemishes, brightening, hydrating, remineralizing, reducing the appearance of sun damage and firming skin.

Source is Everything

We source our organic proprietary Gigartina, Undaria and Macrocystis algae from the purest waters in the world. Our seaweed originates from the pristine waters of Patagonia at the confluence of the southward-flowing Brazil current and the Antarctic Circumpolar current. These frigid waters, and constantly shifting extremes of sea surface temperature help to produce some of the world’s most bioavailable, nutrient-rich seaweed. OSEA’s proprietary trio of seaweed species have the unique distinction of being USDA Certified Organic.

Eco-responsible Sourcing

Many companies pollute the ocean by venturing out on diesel-powered ships to harvest seaweed using invasive methods that damage marine life and the ocean floor. OSEA’s seaweed is eco-responsibly hand-foraged as it naturally makes its way into the shallow waters of the pristine Patagonian shore.

OSEA’s Seaweed is Hand-Harvested, and Delicately Dried in the Sun

The Discovery of Our Source

Our founder, Jenefer Palmer, holistic healer, and former spa director of the historic holistic spa at Murietta Hot Springs, traveled the globe in search of the purest most nutrient-rich, bioavailable seaweed possible. Her meticulous research lead her to a desolate region in Patagonia called “El Fin del Mundo,” literally the southernmost inhabited tip of the southern hemisphere. Here, at the end of the world, the penguin population far outstrips humans, and massive glaciers, thick forests and majestic mountains meet the sea. A local family (who would become OSEA’s exclusive seaweed supplier) showed her where she could find the most bioavailable sources of organic Gigartina, Undaria and Macrocystis algae and taught her how to gently hand-harvest and delicately dry our seaweed in the sun. Learn more about our proprietary seaweed in our Ingredient Glossary.

Proprietary Seaweed Trio

OSEA’s seaweed is sourced exclusively from the purest, most pristine waters in the world in Patagonia. Our proprietary seaweed is certified organic and kosher!

Our proprietary organic seaweed species are Gigartina, Undaria and Macrocystis. We use these in powder, whole leaf and extract forms.

Gigartina Skottsbergii

osea gigartina skincare

Gigartina is a red marine algae with hydrophilic properties that make it an excellent moisturizing agent and help protect skin against external aggressors such as extreme dry climates, wind and air pollution. Gigartina is rich in trace elements iodine and bromine and sulfated polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are known to deeply hydrate and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The highly sulfated polysaccharides of Gigartina form a hydrating topical film on the surface of skin. This film supports the absorption of nutrients, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

Undaria Pinnatifida

osea undaria skincare

Undaria is a brown marine algae rich in sodium, iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 and helps maintain skin’s moisture balance. Like Gigartina, it is also a rich source of iodine. Undaria contains Fucocidan, which is a particularly hydrating compound that promotes a youthful, plump appearance.

Macrocystis Pyrifera

osea macrocystis skincare

Macrocystis, commonly known as “Giant Bladder Kelp” is the largest of all marine algae and contains high levels of iodine, omega-3 and omega 6 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Macrocystis helps reduce the appearance of blemishes and surface redness, while improving skin texture and tone. It also reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It has a gelatinous quality for a nourished, healthy glow to your skin.
