There was a time when wearing mineral sunscreen meant accepting a thick, chalky texture that was hard to blend and almost guaranteed to leave behind a heavy white cast. So when our founder and Chief Seaweed Officer, Jenefer Palmer, developed a clean mineral sunscreen that not only shields skin from UVA + UVB rays with non-nano zinc oxide but also blends effortlessly and boosts hydration, we were intrigued. Enter Marine Screen SPF 50, a daily sunscreen for the sun you live in. Lightweight, hydrating, and designed to wear beautifully alone, over moisturizer, or under makeup, it's made for everyday protection. But does it really live up to the hype? To find out, we asked our team’s biggest mineral SPF skeptics to use the product for a full week. Ahead, their honest reviews.

The Experience:
“Because my skin is prone to breakouts, especially during the warmer months, I’ve spent my life mostly avoiding mineral sunscreen. The only SPF I felt comfortable wearing was EltaMD’s chemical and mineral hybrid. Everything else felt like it was sitting in a thick, pore-clogging layer on my skin. OSEA’s Marine Screen is the first mineral SPF I’ve used on my face that wasn’t greasy and didn’t make me break out.”
The Results:
“This is the mineral sunscreen that made me finally love mineral sunscreen. It took about 30 seconds to blend the formula into my skin, and to my surprise, all that I could see was a healthy-looking sheen. I didn’t feel like I had a heavy coating on my skin, or was dripping in oil. My face could still breathe, it felt like skin. It even acted as a nice base for my foundation. There was a minimal white cast, if anything.”
Everyday Ritual:
“I spend a lot of time outdoors, have a pretty active lifestyle, and sweat a lot so I love that Marine Screen is lightweight enough for me to apply and reapply throughout the day. I wake up early, wash my face with Ocean Cleanser, roll on Ocean Eyes® Serum, put on SPF and get my toddler ready for the day. If I'm lucky I can fit in a run after daycare drop-off and shower before work. After my shower, I’ll reapply Marine Screen, and tackle my inbox. Mid-day, I’ll take a quick walk or do a strength workout (Hilary Duff put me on to the Ladder app). After work, it’s playground time with my son. I take Marine Screen with me everywhere. I like that I don’t have to think about it. It feels like my natural skin.”

The Experience:
“I know that SPF is non-negotiable, but I only started wearing sunscreen regularly when I turned 30. I typically cannot use mineral SPF because of the white cast. I’ve been on a hunt for a sunscreen with clean ingredients that worked for my skin tone. So I decided to give Marine Screen a try.”
The Results:
“I admit that I was a little hesitant at first to be a tester for this product and assumed it would leave that dreaded white cast. While there was a very slight white cast, I was surprised by how well it blended into my skin. I applied this after my moisturizer, and even felt comfortable wearing it alone. It sank in beautifully and unlike many sunscreens that I’ve tried, didn’t feel slick. It was so lightweight, it almost felt like I was wearing nothing at all. I applied pressed powder on my t-zone and didn’t experience any pilling. This is the first sunscreen that felt good enough to reapply.”
Everyday Ritual:
“I live in Brooklyn and spend a lot of time outdoors. Living in a polluted, humid city means that I wear light skincare layers in the summer and lots of SPF. I wake up early, apply my Marine Screen and walk to my neighborhood café to get a matcha. I take my dog out for about 3–4 walks a day. On the weekends, I bike with friends near Domino Park in Williamsburg. On Saturdays, I go to the farmers market at Fort Greene Park. If you have oily skin like mine and live in a humid climate, Marine Screen works well as a standalone moisturizer. I love that it’s fragrance free and I even wear it on my body.”

The Experience:
“I’ve been wearing sunscreen every single day since my early 20s. I typically use chemical sunscreen from K-beauty brands because of my darker complexion and my fear of looking ghostly white. I was very curious to see how Marine Screen would blend with my skin tone. I was surprised that there was little to no white cast.”
The Results:
“I absolutely love how lightweight this formula is and was very pleased to see how it melted into my skin. I layered it over Rodial Collagen Drops and OSEA Seabiotic® Water Cream. Next, I applied my tinted serum on top as my makeup. Marine Screen plays well with all of my products. The texture is silky and smooth with a sheer, satin finish. Finally, a mineral SPF that doesn’t feel heavy like paste. I typically use EltaMD SPF after I get microneedling, but will probably use OSEA moving forward.”
Everyday Ritual:
“I live in San Diego, so every day is basically a beach day. My partner and I try to start every morning with bone broth, grounding ourselves outside, and getting a little sun on our faces. Then we make our way back inside, check emails and try to take breaks in the afternoon for a little more fresh air and sunshine. Marine Screen is lightweight, unscented and fits easily into our daily routine. We are both trying to get better about reapplying it throughout the day. My partner has sensitive skin, so the fact that he is obsessed with it says a lot!”

The Experience:
“Traditionally, my commitment to sunscreen has been pretty low key. I knew it was important but I had a hard time finding brands that met my ingredient standards. And when I got pregnant, clean formulations became even more critical. I mostly reached for mineral sunscreen sticks and was never happy with the greasy film they left on my face. So when I heard we were launching a clean, mineral sunscreen, I was excited to try it.”
The Results:
“I love everything about this SPF—the clean ingredients, texture, finish, and wear are all fantastic. I appreciated the healthy sheen and the velvety, almost-matte finish. I applied it generously, unlike my sunscreen sticks, and it blended in beautifully. I’ve been using it daily on myself and my daughters. I wore it before I went running and it was breathable, didn’t cause any breakouts or irritation and layered well under my blush and highlighter. I even used it on a hike in 90-degree weather and it held up beautifully.”
Everyday Ritual:
“We live in Colorado, and the sun is especially strong here any time of year. Just being outdoors for a short period of time comes with the risk of getting burned. Now, in my 40s, SPF is more important to me than ever. I feel like I’ve finally found a mineral sunscreen that I actually want to wear every single day.
I wake up and wash my face with Ocean Cleanser, apply a vitamin C serum by Maelove, followed by Atmosphere Protection® Cream and Marine Screen. I spend a lot of time outside tending to my vegetable garden and we take walks in the early evenings. Marine Screen has become an everyday staple for my whole family. My daughters love that it doesn’t feel sticky!”
