Jenefer & Melissa's first press feature together in 1999! As OSEA celebrates 30 years, we're reflecting on the journey that brought us here.
Inspired by our great-grandmother Elsa's belief in the healing power of the ocean, Jenefer spent a decade developing seaweed-powered formulas before founding OSEA in 1996. What began as one family's vision has grown into a community of people who share our love for the sea.
For three decades, we've remained family-oriented, guided by the same values that inspired OSEA from the beginning. As mother and daughter, it's a privilege to continue this work together and to carry our family's story forward.

What's the one thing you wish everyone knew?
The seaweed sediment isn't a flaw. It's part of my story.
What's something people misunderstand about you?
They think body oil has to feel heavy. I prefer to prove otherwise.

Acts of hydration.

Spotlight: Meet Elsa!
Jenefer's grandmother and
OSEA's inspirationRead moreElsa was a true pioneer. More than 100 years ago, she became one of the first female chiropractors in America, dedicating her life to helping others heal through the power of touch. A mother of six, she loved working with her hands, whether caring for her patients or knitting sweaters for her family.
After recovering from a serious injury, Elsa discovered the healing power of the ocean. She went on to found the Long Island Polar Bear Club and swam in the sea nearly every day of the year, even through snow and ice. Her unwavering belief in the power of the sea became a guiding inspiration for her granddaughter, Jenefer, and continues to shape OSEA's philosophy today.

More seaweed facts- Seaweeds are generally grouped into three categories: brown, red and green. This is based on the pigments they use to capture sunlight.
- Seaweeds are algae, not plants. They absorb nutrients directly from the ocean, giving each species its own unique composition.
- There are more than 20,000 known species of seaweed, each with its own profile of nutrients and minerals.
- Some species of kelp can grow more than a foot per day under ideal conditions
Jenefer's Famous Homemade Granola
"Gluten-free and loaded with nutritious almonds and seeds.
Enjoy with plant-based yogurt, fruit or just by the spoonful!" —Jenefer
Read full recipeWhat you'll need:
- 4 oz hemp seeds
- 8 oz sunflower seeds
- 8 oz pumpkin seeds
- 32 oz gluten-free rolled oats
- 8 oz maple syrup
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil
- 8 oz sliced almonds
- 8 oz raisins
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix the seeds and oats in a large bowl. Add the maple syrup and coconut oil, then stir until evenly combined.
- Spread the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and place in the oven.
- After 30 minutes, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Add the sliced almonds while stirring the granola, making sure everything bakes and browns evenly.
- Bake for another 30 minutes, then remove from the oven. Stir in the raisins. It's tempting to taste the granola right away, but let it cool before eating!
