In celebration of Mother’s Day and all the things our moms and mother figures do for us, big and small, we asked our community—including our own mother-daughter founders—to share the advice, rituals and little reminders their moms passed down. The kind you carry with you for life.
Patti Quintero, Founder of UMA
For Patti Quintero, motherhood is both a personal journey and a lifelong calling. A Los Angeles–based doula, birth educator, yoga and meditation teacher, Patti has spent over two decades guiding women through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Through her work and her practice, she brings a deeply intuitive, integrative approach to one of life’s most transformative transitions.
Patti, what’s something your mother taught you that’s stayed with you?
“My mother is a true force of life. She carries an endless energy, not only to celebrate life with her family and friends, but also to give generously and support others. She is a living example of the truth that what you give, you receive.
She reminds me not to take life too seriously, and to always make time to celebrate through laughter, dancing, friendship and quiet moments of reflection. She has been my greatest mentor and a deep source of inspiration in my own journey into motherhood.”
What’s the best beauty advice you’ve received from your mother?
“Your inner brightness is what truly makes you beautiful. My mother always reminded me that when I’m not feeling well, brightening myself up both externally and internally makes everything feel better. This simple wisdom has always been her advice, and I carry it with me to this day.”
Favorite Mother’s Day gift?
“I love the Undaria Algae Body Oil and Undaria Algae Body Butter. I really prioritize moisturizing my skin and this duo is so soothing and penetrating. It really keeps my skin glowy and soft without any greasiness.”
Jenefer and Melissa Palmer, Mother-Daughter Duo and Co-Founders of OSEA
For OSEA founders Jenefer and Melissa, Mother’s Day is especially meaningful. Born in Malibu in 1996, OSEA was inspired by three generations of women and a shared belief in the healing power of the sea. That connection traces back over 100 years to their matriarch, Elsa—guiding the brand with a deep respect for nature.
Melissa, what’s the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from your mom?
“Always be kind. My mom founded OSEA as a single mom while at the same time struggling to support us. I have no idea how she managed to juggle it all, but she did it with grace and determination. Her unwavering commitment to her values and being a kind person through it all has been an incredible example.
Jenefer, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned from being a mother?
“The power of love and connection. When you have a child, your heart expands in ways you never thought possible.”
Melissa, what’s the best beauty advice you learned from your mom?
“My mom taught me to always wear mineral sunscreen or sunprotective clothing, even on cloudy days. She wears a full-body swimsuit and a face mask in the ocean.”
Jenefer, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned from working with your daughter?
“Melissa has taught me that creative minds need business brains. We both bring such unique perspectives to the table. What makes it easy is there’s built-in trust between us.”
Melissa, what's the fondest memory you have of your mother from your childhood?
Being at Murrieta Hot Springs and taking a mud bath with my mom.
Favorite Mother’s Day gift?
Jenefer: “My current favorite, Dream Night Cream with Bio-Retinol was created to reduce the visible effects of stress on skin during its nightly repair phase. My skin looks amazing in the morning and what a great surprise it was that it works so well on reducing the look of my dark circles."
Meghan Jenay, Real Estate Entrepreneur
For Meghan Jenay, motherhood is rooted in intention, simplicity and building a life she loves. A real estate entrepreneur and mom of two, she balances work and family life while staying grounded in what matters most. In her free time, you can usually find her line dancing, her favorite way to reset.
Meghan, what’s something your mother taught you that’s stayed with you?
“Less is more.”
“It’s something I learned early on from my mom. She always kept her skincare routine simple and intentional, and I remember her being in the kitchen making masks out of whatever she had on hand. She showed me beauty doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.”
What’s the best beauty advice you learned from your mom?
“Drink your water. Cutting out sugary drinks and staying hydrated has made the biggest difference in my skin. When I’m consistent with it, my skin just looks healthier, clearer, and naturally glowy.”
Favorite Mother’s Day gift?
“The Undaria Algae Body Oil will forever be my go-to. I’ve been using it for over six years, and nothing else compares.”
