Welcome to winter! Weather shifts can leave your skin out in the cold. The chillier months leave our skin feeling dry, dehydrated, flaky, chapped and just generally crying out for help. So how can we best prepare for the biting cold? By giving your skincare the same consideration as your wardrobe, leaning heavily on hardworking layers and incorporating seaweed-powered products that help replenish and support your skin's moisture barrier. Ahead, learn how to give your skin the hydration boost it craves to stay healthy and radiant all season long.
7 Winter Skincare Tips
1. Use a Nourishing, Gentle Cleanser
Dry winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin’s moisture barrier and produce microscopic cracks that allow moisture to escape. This is called transepidermal water loss, and it’s the last thing you want when humidity is already at its lowest. A healthy moisture barrier is the key to healthy-looking skin. Swap your cleanser for a creamy, hydrating one, like Ocean Cleansing Milk that melts away makeup and impurities without stripping skin. Our most soothing, milky cleanser, packed with moisturizing glycerin and Undaria seaweed, leaves skin feeling smooth, soft and comforted.
2. Exfoliate Without Overdoing It
It might sound counterintuitive, but exfoliating is as important in cold temperatures as it is in the peak of summer. Regular exfoliation helps maintain a healthy-looking skin barrier. When you remove excess dead cells on the skin’s surface, it also helps your hydrating face and body serums absorb better. Reach for clean, clinically tested products, like our Seaglow Overnight Serum AHA Treatment. This face exfoliant uses a blend of acids and nourishing seaweed to even tone and texture overnight, so you can wake up to visibly clearer pores and smoother, brighter-looking skin.
For the body, we love the Salts of the Earth Body Scrub. Apply our mineral-rich salt scrub in a moisturizing shea butter and Gigartina seaweed base to buff away roughness and glow from neck to toes.
3. Skip the Scalding Water
Long, hot showers can strip skin of its natural oils. When the temperature drops, taking a cooler, shorter rinse can help protect the skin’s moisture barrier. And use a gentle body wash or soap with minimal lather. Reach for our seaweed-boosted Undaria Algae™ Body Wash. Rich in aloe, glycerin and jojoba oil, it effectively cleanses without stripping and leaves skin soft.
4. Moisturize Immediately After Washing
One of our favorite ways to moisturize is right out of the shower. This helps seal hydration into your skin. Winter-skin moisturizing also calls for a layered approach. At nighttime, apply our Dream Bio-Retinol Body Serum neck to toes to visibly smooth lines and wrinkles on your body. Follow with our ultra-rich Undaria Algae™ Body Butter. This luxurious blend of Undaria seaweed, ceramides and whipped shea butter is clinically shown to hydrate for 72 hours³. To lock in hydration, finish with a generous layer of Anti-Aging Body Balm. Rich in botanical oils, this liquid-silk balm melts into skin to visibly improve elasticity and firmness, leaving a radiant, lit-from-within glow even through the driest months.
5. Use a Hyaluronic Acid Serum
When it comes to winter face serums, the best formulas include powerful ingredients like hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws moisture from the air to your skin for a hydrated, dewy effect. Our bestsellering Hyaluronic Sea Serum features high and low molecular weights of hyaluronic acid that work synergistically to boost hydration and deliver multi-level moisturization, while Japanese Miru seaweed replenishes and balances the skin’s natural moisture levels.
6. Switch to a Richer Moisturizer
A good moisturizer is your first line of defense in winter, replenishing your skin’s hydration levels morning and night. If you’ve been using lighter lotions during the warmer months, consider switching to a richer, more moisturizing formula, such as our Advanced Protection Cream. This nourishing face cream is clinically shown to instantly boost skin hydration by 121% and prevent water loss¹. The best part? It uses bio-retinol, extracted from the bidens pilosa plant to visibly improve lines and wrinkles without irritation.
7. Keep Using Sunscreen
Sunscreen in winter? You bet! The sun is out year-round, and even when it's overcast, harmful UV rays are still present, so your sunscreen habits shouldn't change with the seasons. Make sure to keep applying sunscreen every single day. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher². Our Marine Screen SPF 50 has a lightweight, fragrance-free formula and delivers broad-spectrum protection to help prevent visible signs of aging while nourishing skin. This mineral sunscreen is also formulated with hyaluronic acid to help boost hydration for softer, smoother skin, making it a winter-skin must-have.
