The season of parched skin is upon us—a state of affairs not exactly helped by the combination of cranking radiators and dry, chilly air. With months to go until the spring thaw, it’s time to take a deep dive into our winter skincare routines and incorporate seaweed-infused barrier-boosting products to stay hydrated. We like to think of them as wintertime skin saviors able to transform dry, dull skin into the glowing complexion you’re used to year-round.
Skincare Tips for Winter
1. Upgrade Your Winter Skincare Routine
Dry winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin’s moisture barrier and produce microscopic cracks that allow moisture to escape. This is called transepidermal water loss, and it’s the last thing you want when humidity is already at its lowest. A healthy moisture barrier is the key to healthy-looking skin. Swap your cleanser for a creamy, hydrating one, like Ocean Cleansing Milk that melts away makeup and impurities without stripping skin. Our most soothing, milky cleanser, packed with moisturizing glycerin and Undaria seaweed, leaves skin feeling smooth, soft and comforted.
Another great product for thirsty skin is our Hyaluronic Sea Serum. High and low molecular weights of hyaluronic acid work synergistically to boost hydration and deliver multi-level moisturization, while Japanese Miru seaweed replenishes and balances the skin’s natural moisture level for healthy-looking, hydrated skin. To top it all off, snow mushroom (naturally rich in hyaluronic acid) forms a cushiony hydration layer on skin to seal in moisture. It’s the ultimate addition to your winter skincare routine.
For your final step, you’ll need a barrier-boosting moisturizer. For winter, we’re loving the Advanced Protection Cream, our richest, most nourishing cream yet. This product is clinically shown to instantly boost skin hydration by 121% and prevent water loss¹. It’s the barrier protection your skin’s been dreaming of. The best part? It uses a vegan retinol alternative for the results you love without the irritation that can accompany retinol.
2. Keep Using Sunscreen
Sunscreen isn’t just a summer-only deal. The sun is out year-round, and even when it’s overcast, harmful UV rays can still disturb your skin’s moisture barrier. Make sure to keep applying sunscreen daily. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher².
3. Exfoliating Without Overdoing It
As any skincare enthusiast knows, exfoliating is the best way to get rid of dead skin cells and visibly smooth texture, leaving you with a clean slate. But harsh scrubs and over-exfoliating can compromise your moisture barrier and damage skin.
That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy soft, radiant skin during the winter. Space out your scrubbing sessions and use clean, clinically tested products, like our Sealow Overnight Serum AHA treatment. This face exfoliant uses a blend of acids and nourishing seaweed to even tone and texture overnight, so you can wake up to clearer pores and smoother, brighter-looking skin.
For the body, we love the Salts of the Earth Body Scrub. Apply our mineral-rich salt scrub in a moisturizing shea butter and Gigartina seaweed base to buff away roughness and glow from neck to toes.
4. Skip the Scalding Water
When the air is frigid, a hot shower can feel like a dream. Dialing down the temperature can make a world of difference on your skin. We recommend short showers using tepid water––and body washes or soaps with minimal lather. Reach for our seaweed-boosted Undaria Algae Body Wash. Rich in aloe and glycerin, it effectively cleanses skin without stripping and leaves skin soft.
5. Moisturize Immediately After Washing
As soon as you’re out of the bath or shower, it’s time to moisturize! This helps seal the moisture into your skin. For a silky, glowing finish, reach for our Anti-Aging Body Balm, rich in skin-softening acai, babassu, coconut, and passion fruit oils. For a smooth, matte finish, try our nutrient-rich Undaria Algae Body Butter. This buttery blend of Undaria seaweed, ceramides, and whipped shea butter is clinically shown to hydrate for 72 hours³.
